Police Swiftly Respond to the Attack

Copperbelt Police Commissioner has confirmed the incident, stating that officers quickly intervened to restore order and ensure the safety of the President and his delegation. Several suspects have since been apprehended for questioning in connection with the attack.

“The situation is under control. We have deployed additional security officers in Chingola to prevent any further disturbances,” said the Police Commissioner.

The police further warned members of the public against engaging in acts of violence or lawlessness, emphasizing that such behavior undermines national peace and unity.

State House Condemns the Violence

In a statement released by State House, President Hakainde Hichilema expressed disappointment over the incident, describing it as “regrettable and unnecessary.” He urged Zambians to resolve their differences through dialogue rather than violence.

“Violence has no place in our democracy. We must rise above political divisions and focus on development and unity,” the President stated.

The statement added that the Head of State remains committed to visiting all provinces and districts, regardless of political affiliations, to ensure equitable distribution of national resources and opportunities.

Political Tension on the Copperbelt

The Copperbelt Province has historically been a politically active region, often serving as a battleground for competing political interests. Analysts believe the recent incident highlights the growing tension between government supporters and opposition groups ahead of upcoming local elections.

Observers have urged political leaders to tone down inflammatory rhetoric and encourage peaceful engagement among their supporters.

Government and Public Reaction

Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, has also condemned the attack, saying it is a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law. He assured citizens that those involved will face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, several civil society organizations and church leaders have called for calm, urging both political supporters and citizens to respect national leadership, regardless of their political leanings.

Social media has been flooded with reactions since the incident, with Zambians expressing concern over the country’s political climate and calling for stronger unity among all parties.
